"Mentoring a developing manager in our field makes me go back and get in touch with my own training and work experience. Sharing both success and failure and lessons learned in real life helped me reconnect in a personal way with why taking on the role of a leader is so necessary to the outcome of the work we do."
"The Mentoring role provided me an opportunity as a former Manager and leader to reexamine the ways and approaches that I used to lead to offer different perspectives on how I could have done things a little differently and possibly created some different results."
"I was honored to be part of the ATTC Mentor program. I feel like my mentee should have been a mentor, as the relationship was reciprocal! The program enhanced my listening skills and also became a motivation to be a proactive participant! "
"Participating as a mentor provided the opportunity to connect with others outside of my state and to grow (and reaffirm) my own leadership practices. This program reignited my passion for leadership and was an excellent reminder of the importance of growing the next generation of leaders!"
"This was a great opportunity for me to refine my own skills as a mentor. "
"This was my first time participating in a formal mentor program. The program facilitators were supportive and encouraging, and the overall workload was light. I really enjoyed meeting new faces in the field and hearing their experiences."
"Through the Leadership Academy, I connected with leadership professionals in the behavioral health field. This has supported my professional growth and expanded my national network. It has been invaluable to my professional development. "
"Retirees have a lot to contribute to a Leadership Academy. From a clinical perspective, the experience provided the interchange and knowledge of new treatment and recovery models embolden by discussion of experienced strategies for implementation. From a leadership lens, the opportunity for discussion of proven and promising models opened exciting pathways for focus and self-awareness for both Protege and Mentor. The experience was a chance to "give back". "There are leaders, and those who lead. Leaders inspire!". Thanks to the ATTC cadre of professionals for making this experience a reality for our workforce through SAMHSA support."
The Leadership Academy utilizes the expertise of current substance use treatment and recovery services professionals to guide and assist in the development of leadership skills among emerging leaders. Each protégé will be paired up with a mentor after the Mentor & Protégé Immersion trainings in Denver, Colorado and will be meeting online monthly from March to August to discuss leadership topics and goals.
Mentors are individually recruited and selected based on demonstrated leadership and management expertise. The five-phase structure for mentors provides support for guiding and cultivating a relationship with a protégé:
