The coexistence of both a mental health and a substance use disorder is referred to as a co-occurring disorder (COD). According to SAMHSA, among the 20.2 million adults in the U.S. who experience a substance use disorder (SUD), a majority also have a co-occurring mental illness. The importance of identifying and addressing both mental health issues and a substance use disorder regardless of the treatment settings is necessary to improve the overall outcomes for participants. Initiating early detection and intervention for those that have a co-occurring disorder is crucial. And, according to SAMHSA’s TIP #42- Substance Use Disorder Treatment for People with Co-Occurring Disorders, the most effective dual diagnosis regimen treats both the mental illness and substance issues at the same time.

This online Enhanced Professional Learning (EPL) series will provide 15 hours of instruction and will include blended activities in virtual online groups and self-study related to understanding and integrating Mental Health Disorder and SUD prevention, assessment, and treatment. This will include interactive discussions, videos, performance-based feedback, articles, and activities. Topics will include such areas as screening, signs and symptoms, ASAM criteria, scope of practice, and referral resources.
